shopgirl (let's talk salespeople)

Reiss top, Current/Elliot Jeans, Miu Miu belt, Luv Aj necklace
I wanted to ask you about salespeople.
When shopping in London on Monday, I couldn't walk for five meter without somebody asking me if I was alright. In Geneva people in general and shopgirls in particular are distant. I got used to that.
So after a day telling everybody that I was good, thank you, I was checking out this brand that I didn't know well. The sales person became very attentive. She was showing me combinations with the items I was eyeing. I wanted to try a pair of black pants. While in the dressing room she brought me A LOT of tops and shoes that would look good with those pants.
I enjoyed trying on half the store. But I felt that I had to buy something. I choose this top. And I have to admit that I felt guilted into buying it. I would have felt bad leaving without buying. I was tired, and hungry and didn't have the strength to disappoint her.
There are times, when I am in favorite Italian shop by example, when I love the sales woman bringing me everything in the dressingroom.
But it is my preference to be left alone when I am shopping. Do you, or do you feel ignored then? Tell me what kind of assistance do you like?Pin It now!

  1. I'm totally with you – I generally like to be left alone while I'm shopping so I can really think through options without getting confused. This top is super cute though, and will be versatile through the transitioning seasons!

  3. I prefer when people leave me alone when shopping–if I have a question, I'll ask! However, after working retail for years in high school/college, I know that there can be a huge pressure to be attentive to customers/open a sales card/etc...especially if they work on commission, so I always try to have patience!

  4. I avoid sales people. I know what I like and if I need help I'll ask. I hate when they're overbearing!

  5. I like to be helped if needed, if I need another size, or I would like to try on something in other color. I understand how you felt.

  10. The same in Germany like in Italy: the sales personal here is very distant and in the normal case not pushy. Sometimes I wished a little bit more service ... But I made a really great experience at the Chanel Shop in Munich this week when I bought my new Chanel 2.55: the staff was extraordinary competent and polite!

  11. I totally agree!

Where I live the sales people let you browse around for a bit, and then come up to you and ask if you need some help or if you'd just like to look around a little more! I really like that, because it really annoys me when they're following me around and I think it's quite rude as well.

  12. This top looks great on you but I totally agree - I much prefer browsing without pushy salespeople! If I need help, I can ask for it!

  13. That happens to me all the time, and I hate when I mainly buy something just because I feel pressured. They will even give you bad looks if you don't buy something or you come to return something. They should treat you as a customer no matter what.
