5 Lessons I Learned from Renovating in Italy

Embarking on a journey to renovate a home in Italy is both a thrilling adventure and a challenge! 🇮🇹✨ If you’re thinking about it or simply curious, remember these tips to save yourself some headaches!

1. Find a Good Geometra or Architect

Nothing matters more than selecting a reliable geometra (surveyor) or architect. You will need to apply for lots of permits. In our case, we faced delays because our initial architect failed to secure the necessary permits and kept us in the dark. Many Italian towns have strict regulations regarding the preservation of a building's original character, so having someone knowledgeable on your side is indispensable

2. Utilize Local Artisans

One of the most delightful aspects of renovating in Italy is the opportunity to work with local artisans. We managed to find talented artisans who fabricated custom borders for our balcony, for example. From doors to fountains, stairs, and fences, artisans can create virtually anything you need in wood, metal, or stone, often at a surprisingly reasonable cost. Supporting local artisans not only enhances your home’s character but also contributes to the community and helps you make new friends.

3. Discover the Best Italian Tiles

When it comes to tiles, Italy truly stands out. Make a point to explore tile shops while you're there; you won’t find such exquisite collections anywhere else. If you’re outside Italy, consider using a tile importer like Tileexpert to bring back some of that unique Italian craftsmanship, as local alternatives do not measure up at all.

4. A Good Project Manager is Everything

Having an effective project manager can make or break your renovation experience. During our renovation of a house in Lucca, we completed the project quickly thanks to our fantastic project manager, even during the pandemic. Our current house renovation took significantly longer because our project manager was juggling multiple jobs. Building a good relationship with your project manager can really pay off. It leads to better communication and a stronger commitment to the project.

5. Choose Your Kitchen Wisely

When it comes to your kitchen, the options are vast. If you're looking for something sleek and modern, you'll find a plethora of Italian makers offering kitchens in every price range. For a more traditional touch, it is better to find a kitchen maker who can design a bespoke solution for you. While there are stores that can import English kitchens, working with a skilled local cabinetmaker (falegname) or a quality furniture store that crafts its own products is your best bet for a unique design. Or go to IKEA  and customize it with different fronts.

Taking on a renovation project in Italy is a wild ride full of ups and downs. Just keep these tips in mind, and you'll make the whole experience a lot easier. In the end, you’ll have a home that really shows off the charm and vibe of Italy. Happy renovating, everyone!
